Dog-Friendly Destinations

The Jerte Valley in the province of Cáceres is one of those ideal places if you decide to travel with your dog.One of Extremadura's best-known destinations for nature, rest, and relaxation. The valley is located in the northeast of Extremadura, a few kilometers from Plasencia. Its location and terrain give it its own microclimate, ideal for growing picota cherries (with the Jerte Designation of Origin) and for enjoying an exceptional natural environment and beautiful surroundings.

- What to see in the Jerte Valley with your dog?

Obviously, the best activities for them are hikes and trails that allow us to discover the beauty of Jerte's nature. The Jerte Valley has 19 marked trails that run between steep gorges and hillsides covered with cherry trees. All of them vary in length, duration, and difficulty, and there are also plenty of gorges, the famous Jerte River, and the picturesque streets of its villages.

The main point of interest in the Jerte Valley is the Garganta de los Infiernos Nature Reserve. If you are visiting this area for the first time, the Garganta de los Infiernos would be our top recommendation, taking the route to the Los Pilones area to see the giant's kettles, which are large pools carved into the rock by river erosion, particularly those found in the area known as Los Pilones.

On the website of the Regional Government of Extremadura, you can check out the routes they suggest in the Garganta de los Infiernos.

-The Garganta de las Nogaledas.

We suggest a hiking route with numerous waterfalls and cascades to the Garganta de las Nogaledas . This route starts in the village of Navaconcejo, where, after crossing the stone bridge over the Jerte River on a path, it leads to the mouth of the gorge. This is a circular hiking route, with a low level of difficulty, just over four kilometers long, and an estimated duration of an hour and a half. You will walk along a well-marked trail and come across four waterfalls that will surprise you with their cascading water.

-La Cascada del Caozo

La Cascada del Caozo is located within the Bonal Gorge, between the municipalities of Valdastillas and Piornal. The walking route starts on Calle Piscinas, in the northern part of Valdastillas. Take the Agrupación de Cooperativas road for about 500 meters until you cross a bridge over the Bonal gorge. Here, a paved road branches off to the right, already marked with the route.

-Route of the Ancient Chestnut Trees

In the shadow of the Sierra de San Bernabé, this route is marked with green and white signs and leads into the forest of trees. Magical scenery that yields to the presence of the chestnut trees of Casas del Castañar, recognized and protected as Singular Trees for their approximately 700 years of age. A circular route of approximately 1.5 hours that starts from the municipality of Casas del Castañar.

-Cherry Blossom Festival in the Jerte Valley

Spring brings the flowering of more than a million cherry trees to the Jerte Valley, covering the entire valley with a white blanket. It is a true spectacle of nature. The Cherry Blossom Festival in the Jerte Valley, declared of Regional Tourist Interest, is a marvel of nature.
The cherry blossoms usually bloom at the end of March. The flowering lasts approximately two weeks, during which more than 1 million cherry trees show us all their beauty.

During those days, the entire valley is covered in white, creating an incredible spectacle that attracts thousands of people from all over the world. During these days, visitors can enjoy exhibitions, displays of traditional crafts at markets, musical performances, and all kinds of cultural events from this area and Extremadura in general.

If you are lucky enough to visit during this period of maximum flowering, we recommend visiting the villages in the mountains, including Piornal, the highest village in Extremadura, to enjoy beautiful views of the entire area. From the top of the Tornavacas Pass, you can also enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire valley.
