Hello, 4Pateros! Portugal has become one of the most popular destinations for travelers with dogs. When traveling, we always look for plans and activities that we can do together with our dogs. And one of the best plans in summer is, without a doubt, going to the beach with them to enjoy the sea.
In this article, we present the 6 official dog beaches in Portugal and 'non-concession' beaches.

-Portinho da Areia do Norte Beach (Peniche)

The first beach in the country to allow pets. It has signs explaining the rules of use and dispensers for pet waste bags. Its location, just north of the Papoa Peninsula, makes Portinho da Areia do Norte Beach a privileged spot, as you can see the Berlengas Archipelago from there.
It is a small sandy beach, approximately 80 meters long, with no support infrastructure.

-Praia do Coral (Viana do Castelo)

The second dog beach in Portugal. It is an area about 80 meters long, on the promenade that leads to Cabo Carvoeiro.

Among the beach rules is the requirement that animals be registered, kept on a leash, and, in the case of breeds considered dangerous, wear a muzzle.

The area does not have lifeguards and is supported by the Peniche Port Authority to ensure compliance with the rules.

-Soft Sea Beach (Esposende)

It was inaugurated in 2018 as part of the Municipal Strategic Plan for Animal Welfare. This long sandy beach is equipped with trash cans and drinking fountains for our furry friends. It is ideal for walking and watching the sunset with our pets.

-Praia da Ramalha Sul (Esposende)

The beaches of Ramalha Sul and Suave Mar, both in Esposende, in the district of Braga, were inaugurated in 2018 as dog beaches. It is a very wide sandy beach, with a consolidated dune system to the north and a dune in formation to the south.

-Praia das Amoreiras

It is located in Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Opened in the summer of 2026, your dog can run freely on the beach. It is a long beach with fine sand and surrounded by cliffs.

Dog beaches in Portugal that are "not concessioned"

In Portugal, there are more beaches where you can take your dogs. These are beaches without supervision or surveillance and without any kind of service.

Normally, non-concession beaches are difficult to access, and you can usually access them as long as there is no sign indicating otherwise. In the low season, there is usually no problem as there are few people, but in the high season, we may find that we are not allowed to enter or are asked to leave.
