Renfe has expanded its pet-friendly routes on AVE trains, making it easier to travel with dogs weighing up to 40 kilograms. This initiative is designed to make transportation more comfortable and accessible, opening up new possibilities for thousands of families with dogs.

Now, you can travel with your dog on AVE routes that previously did not allow it. Renfe has added stops in Lleida Pirineus, Camp de Tarragona, Girona, and Figueres Vilafant. Previously, the possibility of traveling with large dogs was only offered on direct connections between Barcelona and Madrid or on semi-direct stops such as Zaragoza.

This expansion allows pet owners to explore more regions of Catalonia with the peace of mind of knowing that their dog is welcome on board.

The Large Pet Project

Since September 2026, Renfe, in collaboration with Nestlé Purina, has been promoting the Large Pet Project. Thanks to this initiative, more than 7,260 dogs weighing up to 40 kilograms have traveled without transport on AVE trains. More than 399,600 small dogs (weighing up to 10 kg) have also been transported in carriers. Conditions for traveling on AVE trains with large dogs Renfe has established clear rules to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers:

· One large dog (up to 40 kg) is allowed per passenger.

· A maximum of two large dogs may travel on each train, located in a specific car with fixed seats.

· Small dogs (less than 10 kg) can travel without restrictions in transport.

These measures seek to balance the passenger experience and the peace of mind of those traveling with their furry friends.
