Plans and Getaways

Summer doesn't always mean beach and sun. For many families with dogs, the mountains are the perfect place: fresh air, endless landscapes, rivers to splash around in, and trails that allow you to enjoy nature together.

If you're looking for a different way to escape the heat, here are five mountain getaways in Spain with your dog, including ideas for routes, villages, and pet-friendly places you won't want to miss.

Plans with your dog in the Aragonese Pyrenees

1. Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park
The most famous in the Pyrenees. The Cola de Caballo route is spectacular, although long (17 km round trip). With a dog, it is better to take shorter sections to Gradas de Soaso, where you can enjoy waterfalls, beech forests, and alpine meadows.

2. Ibón de Piedrafita (Valle de Tena) An easy and very popular excursion. In just 1h30 of gentle climbing, you reach a glacial lake with views of the Peña Telera massif. Perfect for dogs to cool off in summer.

3. Valle de Tena
Based in villages such as Panticosa or Sallent de Gállego, you can take family routes around the Lanuza reservoir, climb to the Baños de Panticosa or explore short trails along rivers and waterfalls.

4. Ibones de Anayet
Moderate route from Formigal that leads to several glacial lakes at the foot of the Anayet peaks. Ideal on clear days, with panoramic views of the Midi d'Ossau.

5. Benasque Valley
The other great jewel of the Aragonese Pyrenees. Here you will find the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park and the Forau de Aigualluts, an easy route with waterfalls and meadows where dogs can enjoy themselves to the fullest.

6. Alquézar Footbridge Route (Sierra de Guara)
It's not high in the mountains, but it's a different kind of outing in the Aragonese Pyrenees. A short walk along footbridges over the River Vero, perfect for dogs that are used to walking.
