Dog Beaches
The new dog beach is El Ejido beach. The new sandy area, set up for our four-legged friends to enjoy, is located on the Costa del Sol, on the border with Fuengirola, whose city council will also set up the adjacent coastal area for dogs.
The Mijas Town Council has approved a modification to its ordinances in order to create the first beach on the coast authorized for the use of animals.
Until now, municipal regulations prohibited the presence of dogs on beaches during the swimming season, but did not restrict the presence of pets during the rest of the year. To use these beaches, a series of rules must be followed, such as: -The animal must always be under control and, if it weighs more than 20 kilos, it must wear a muzzle, as must dogs with a strong temperament. -Owners must carry the dog's documentation with them and must avoid leaving excrement on the beach. If this occurs, it must be picked up.
-Potentially dangerous dogs are prohibited from beaches.
This beach, covering an area of 2,500 square meters and which will be properly marked, borders the municipality of Fuengirola, whose City Council will also create a beach with similar characteristics, following the agreement reached by both councils. Discover the most comprehensive and reliable guide to pet-friendly beaches here! Do you agree that dogs considered potentially dangerous should not have the same right to access the beach as other dogs? Would you add or remove any regulations that you consider important?
Last update (June 2015): The Andalusian Regional Government prohibits the creation of dog beaches along its entire coastline and forces the closure of Fuengirola Beach.
Latest update (February 2016): Fuengirola City Council informs us that the dog beach remains open.
